30 May 2015

The long awaited pet expo.  As this was Asia, most of the pets were dressed up and put into strollers.  There was also a quite insane exotic animal section where you could snag a pet eagle, meerkat or for the Archer fans amongst us, an Occelot.  I chose to honor today's post with the prairie dogs.

I loved this view of the mountains after sunset, right before it gets dark. iPhone camera doesn't quite capture the shade of blue unfortunately.

27 May 2015

My favorite fruit in Thailand is jackfruit. It comes in these giant football sized orbs, and are honeycombed with yellow pods. The fruit is absolutely delicious an tastes like nothing else I've had.

26 May 2015

A shrine to honor the favorite monk in Thailand. He is most famous for walking into a pool of salt water and turning it into fresh water for a group of soldiers. I found it fascinating to see one of these giant statues in mid construction... It looks straight out of a Dali painting!

25 may 2015

Out of Bangkok for the week. Today was a trip to the local market.

24 May 2015

Not yet the rainy season but it's coming down out there and pleasantly cooling off.

I have no idea why this is in a random alley...

20 May 2015

I discovered a fabulous art gallery in Sapporo where I bought this painting. I've never been a fan of still life but there's something about this I love.

19 May 2015

First day back in Bangkok and missing Hokkaido. Particularly these which are literally the most delicious things I've ever eaten. They are called cheese tarts but are a delightful hybrid of soufflé and cheesecake. Kinotoya is regarded as the best shop in all japan.

Sapporo has tons of parks. This is Nakajima which features several shrines, a tea house, museums, and a concert hall.

15 May 2015

Spring in Sapporo. Still snow on the mountains.

But flowers are in bloom. I loved these nearly black tulips.

View of the Old Government Building from our hotel.

And catching a home game of the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters. Thank god they play in a dome!

14 May 2015

The small town of Otaru is known for its canals and shops.  We also discovered a wine bar featuring Hokkaido wine. Which given the cold temperatures isn't the greatest, but the beer is spectacular!

13 May 2015

We arrived this morning to the island of Hokkaido in Japan.  It's a brisk 60F here, and a pleasant break from the heat of Thailand.  We are starting our trip in Otaru on the north part of the island.  There are lots of hotsprings in the area; fortunately we have a private one on our balcony.

And here's the view from the tub. It opens directly into the neighboring forest.

It's cool enough the cherry blossoms are still in bloom.

Enjoyed a lovely walk in the woods between rain showers.

Lots of white birches here.  This one looked like an eye and eyebrow to me.

There also appears to be a stone carver in the area.
